Research Content

We are studying about aerospace transportation and propulsion systems such as future reusable spaceplanes and hypersonic aircrafts. Focusing on the high-performance and high-reliability precooled turbojet as a propulsion system, we are conducting several researches from basic researches to the flight demonstration in cooperation with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The specific research themes are as follows.

  1. System optimization, elucidation of dynamic characteristics, construction of thermal management system and flight demonstration on the precooled turbojet.
  2. Researches related to improving the performance of thermo-aerodynamic elements of the engines for a reusable rocket, hypersonic aircraft (HST) and supersonic aircraft (SST), electric aircraft, etc.
  3. Fundamental researches on gas/liquid two-phase flow (cryogenic hydrogen flow) and gas/solid two-phase flow (frost formation).

A Brief Comment

Research and development of future aerospace transportation systems are conducted all over the world, and various system concepts have been proposed. We are also researching the hypersonic turbojets (e.g. ATREX, Precooled Turbojet) in cooperation with JAXA ahead of other countries. Such research including many technical challenges needs to be promoted by a joint team of industry, government, and academia. Waseda University will participate here to play a role in research and expand the research group.
